Young Justice and Green Lantern Finales

I’d mentioned last month that Cartoon Network had decided not to renew Green Lantern: The Animated Series or Young Justice.  After viewing the series finales for both shows this past Young Justiceweekend, my respect for Cartoon Network has sunk to an all-time low.  This attitude toward CN comes because they continue to keep the Pokémon crap on the air and continue to cancel any program that requires more than three brain cells to be understood. Young Justice and Green Lantern were well written and excellently animated series; therefore, it was not really a surprise to me that Cartoon Network chose not to renew them.  The bottom line (and reality) is that neither series sold enough toys to make it profitable to keep the shows on the air.  And that’s too bad because both well written programs were a credit to DC Comics and kept faith with their characters.

That said, both Green Lantern and Young Justice attempted to close loopholes and seal story lines in their respective finales that had developed over the past year.  And I’m pleased to say that both shows were very successful in accomplishing their tasks. I’m not going to bother to provide a synopsis of the finales of either show (you’ll find those on the Internet).  But I am going to tell you that I am300px-GLAS_-_Hal_Jordan_flying sad, very sad, to see both of these programs leave the air.  Over the past two years, I’ve had the pleasure of watching the characters on both of these shows mature and grow.  I watched as the characters experienced love, pain, joy and loss and I, among many, enjoyed every moment of the roller-coaster ride.

I’m not naive enough to believe that some well intentioned, but misguided, letter writing campaign is going to resurrect either one of the two shows because the bottom line is neither show was profitable enough to warrant renewal.  With that said, it has been a joy and a pure pleasure to have spent an hour of my Saturday mornings glued in front of a TV watching these adult-level programs.  I don’t expect much from Cartoon Network in the future, based on their previous history and track record, but I do wish to thank them for broadcasting Young Justice and Green Lantern. It’s the best thing they’ve done in a long time.
