Young Justice Revisited

Back in November, I thought Cartoon Network had a winner on its hands with its new animated series, Young Justice.  I still think it is a welcomed series, but I’ve tempered my opinion of the show since my first review.

Young JusticeDon’t misunderstand me, the series is well written and the voice acting is superb. As of last night’s episode 7, Denial, all of the major characters (pictured) have been introduced, the group dynamic has been established and the interpersonal relationships have been defined. And maybe that’s my problem with this series and one of the reasons I’m no longer excited by this animation. The YJ  relationships remind me too much of the second season of Justice League. I think Comic Critics summed it up best here. We already have a “spy or someone who is not who she seems” in the group. We have Wally West lusting after someone who is lusting after someone else. I hate to sound cynical, but I think I’ve seen this play before and it makes me miss Justice League all the more.

Last night’s episode, Denial, was written by Thomas Pugsley, who has been a star in my book for a long time because of his work on the Starship Trooper cartoon series. Ed Asner as Kent Nelson (Doctor Fate) was inspired casting and bringing back Klarion and Teekl from The New  Batman Adventures worked well to tell the story of Kid Flash learning to  accept (even if for a moment)  what he can not scientifically prove. As I said before, the writing is top notch, but I just can’t help but think I’ve been here before. Young Justice is on Cartoon Network on Fridays at 7PM.

  1. How did I miss Miss Martian was in this the first time around???

It’s a pity that they couldn’t tread new ground with this, but if they’re trying to follow the comics then I understand why some plotlines get repeated.

    • Miss Martian shows up fully in the 4th episode, “Welcome to Happy Harbor,” which is actually the second story because “Independence Day” was a 3 part tale in which she appears at the very end.
